Braylon Edwards Traded To N.Y. Jets: Fool Me Twice.... Jets fleece Browns. Again.

   Unless you've been living under a rock you probably have heard that the Cleveland Browns have traded Braylon Edwards  to the Jets for Chansi Stuckey, a decent wideout, and Jason Trusnick, a special teams ace, and draft picks(a third and a fifth-rounder to be exact but when they are not higher they aren't considered the centerpiece of the deal). There is no question that the timing of the trade indicates that Mangini is trying to make a statement. Unfortunately, the statement of, "If you misbehave than we will trade you to a contender for less on the dollar than Morgan Stanley paid for Bear Stearns" is not one that Browns fans want to hear.
   Even with the statement aspect the timing is horrendous. Remember the eight catch, one hundred fourty eight yard game "Eminem" had this weekend? You could forget about those for a while without Braylon drawing safety help over the top. That should impede his development, and as the only 2009 draft pick that's actually contributing, something the Browns can't afford.
  Another consideration is that the Jets essentially get something for nothing. They get to "rent" Braylon for at least the rest of the season, test drive him and then decide if he is worth a long term commitment. If it works out, great; if not they can "franchise" him and "flip" Braylon in the offseason to the highest bidder, probably for more than they paid considering he's bound to put up better numbers with a team that actually scores some points.  To offset this discrepancy the Browns should have charged the Jets a premium instead of giving them  a discount.
   As far as what they got for Braylon, at first glance it seems as the Browns got too little from the Jets. Again. Don't get me wrong. Chansi is a nice player and it's great to get another special teams contributor( I wonder if Mangini factored Quinn's abilities on special teams when deciding he would be the starter)and who doesn't like some more draft picks, but the key in any trade negotiation is getting the other party to pay for what they think they are getting, not to what the player is worth to you. Granted Braylon drops more balls than Paris Hilton, but if the Jets think they are getting a franchise wide receiver; you've got to make them pay for one.
   So I ask you Browns fans. Did we get fleeced? Let me hear what you have to say.

  1. Maybe Mangini will start giving Robiskie some game time now? In answer to your question however, yeah, we probably got fleeced a bit. That said, it's not to say it might not be better for the team. While he's got talent, Edwards hasn't been playing well for us (hands of butter if you will), so it could be for the best. I don't know anything about Stuckey, but I'd rather have a decent wideout who catches what's thrown to him than a great talent who frustrates to no end by not living up to it. Now, with that in mind, I also think that if the Jets were anxious to get their hands on him, we should have received something a bit more high profile, but I don't know who that would have been.
    On a different subject, I am unimpressed (being polite) with Mangini. The defining moment for me came three quarters in against Baltimore. If your team's down by 28 at the beginning of the 4th quarter, and you're on their 12 yard line, you go for it. I don't care if it's fourth down, a field goal in that situation is giving up. There are times when a field goal is not better than nothing. Who gives a crap about 3 points; you should be trying to win the game even when you know you won't. On top of that, I have no great love of either Quinn or D.A., but how does Mangini figure Anderson earned his Cincinnati starting spot by throwing three interceptions in half a game against Baltimore? That doesn't seem to follow for me.

    Edwards was definitely a talent, but aside from the coverage rolled to his side(which admittedly is a big deal) we haven't seen much in a while. You have a point that Stuckey gives us another reliable up and coming receiver to help develop our rookies.
    As far as Mangini goes......Yak Shemayish. I keep on waffling between hoping he gets fired after one season to being a little pleased that the discipline has improved. I think that the bottom line will be if he can get over his problem of dealing with talented players, because at the end of the day that's what wins games. Keep the good takes coming SammyT....

  3. Malcolm,
    I was wondering if you had any thoughts on Rush Limbaugh being blocked from purchasing the Rams and what does this mean for the Browns.

    @Sammy T,
    Definitely not. But it really has been a very hectic time in life and I have experienced some things that i don't wish on my worst enemy. Hopefully soon everything will be back to normal..... thanks for your concern!
