BROWNS-RAVENS MNF

It will be interesting to see if the Browns will "BRING IT" (I hate Michael Reghi) tonight. Here are the different looks the Browns might give the Ravens:

Either......
A) Flatter than Helen Hunt. Always a distinct possibility with the Brownies, especially due to the hard practice conditions. Thank you Jamal Lewis for all your "leadership".
B) Half-ass it like Braylon. "Yes Rex, we knew he drops passes that cost games. What? No, you can't have your draft picks back. You want to speak to Kokinis? Sorry, he doesn't work her anymore."
C) Concerted effort but totally over matched like the Rams every week. Win or lose, "Spags" has them playing hard every week. Think the Giants don't miss him? Ask Tom Coughlin.
D) Total domination like the Browns-Giants game from last season. Just threw in this option because I needed a D). Chances are not good. All we can do is pray.

Other things to watch tonight: if Daboll (re:Mangini) finally switches up his approach by throwing screens and using Cribbs, if there is any hope for Brady Quinn, how many times the announcers use the word "protest" and the patronizing/sympathizing line that the "Browns fans deserve a winner", if any of Mangini's faces can top the Peyton Manning interception faces from last night.

  1. Well...we got screens...but that's about all we got. I live in Massachusetts, so I don't get to actually watch the games very often, as you can probably imagine. I usually have to follow the games on NFL.com's Gametrax thing, so getting the Browns on Monday night was a bit of a treat, albeit a treat that's been in the cupboard for about a year and is rather stale and tasteless. However, I liked what I saw from the defense. With a couple of notable exceptions, I thought they actually played pretty well. They need to get set up a bit quicker, but that's another story. I like the attitude that Rob Ryan gives that side. They actually play with a bit of fire, which is a refreshing change. At the time, I didn't really like his attitude toward the ill-planned protest idea. My first gut reaction was that it came off as taking the fans support for granted. "This is Cleveland…They’re going to show up and back this damn team." After some reflection, though, I now look at it differently. As almost more of a, "Look, I know we suck, but we're gonna try and get better. We need the fans' support. We know you've been through a lot, but you've supported us through the shit before. Don't turn your backs on us now." I like that he seems to give a damn. We lack talent at some areas and are hurt by injuries in others. What I saw on Monday was a defense playing above their talent level, and I have to think that comes from him.
On the other side of the ball, however...ugh. The whole game I kept thinking (and I think I yelled it aloud once or twice at the TV), "Throw the damn ball down the field!" Maybe Quinn doesn't have the accuracy when throwing distance, but Cripes ya gotta try before the last minute of the game! It just got too predictable. Ok, Quinn's lined up over center. I guess it's either gonna be a short pass or a run up the middle. It was extremely frustrating to watch. The creativity in the play calling was just not there. Brian Daboll is to blame, and Mangini is to blame for not recognizing that fact. I'm now on the "fire them both" bandwagon. If somehow Mangini can turn it around and win a couple games, maybe I'll change my mind, but I doubt it. I realize we don't have that many really talented players, but that's also partly his fault. There are talented coaches out there who have experience building a team and who are open for offers, but we went with this guy? I know that coaching isn't the only problem, but it's a big one.

  2. I understand it's a rebuilding year (when isn't it?), but rebuilding is supposed to involve improvement, and instead we're worse than last year. What I want to know about the Browns is why we can never sync up our qualities in a single season. One year we'll have a high-flying offense, but our defense will be a sieve. The next year we'll suck all around. The next year our defense will be decent (stat-lines aside), but our offense will be a dead fish. We can never seem to match it all together, unless it's matching the two bad sides. *Sigh*

  3. And then we give up 38 points to the Lions...I guess that goes into the never having our qualities in sync category.

Great points, SammyT. No progress. Let's wait and see with Quinn, but I'm not holding my breath. And consider yourself lucky you don't have to watch this crap. Me? I can't turn in off. I'm a losing addict.
