I understand it's a rebuilding year (when isn't it?), but rebuilding is supposed to involve improvement, and instead we're worse than last year. What I want to know about the Browns is why we can never sync up our qualities in a single season. One year we'll have a high-flying offense, but our defense will be a sieve. The next year we'll suck all around. The next year our defense will be decent (stat-lines aside), but our offense will be a dead fish. We can never seem to match it all together, unless it's matching the two bad sides. *Sigh*

Well...we got screens...but that's about all we got. I live in Massachusetts, so I don't get to actually watch the games very often, as you can probably imagine. I usually have to follow the games on NFL.com's Gametrax thing, so getting the Browns on Monday night was a bit of a treat, albeit a treat that's been in the cupboard for about a year and is rather stale and tasteless. However, I liked what I saw from the defense. With a couple of notable exceptions, I thought they actually played pretty well. They need to get set up a bit quicker, but that's another story. I like the attitude that Rob Ryan gives that side. They actually play with a bit of fire, which is a refreshing change. At the time, I didn't really like his attitude toward the ill-planned protest idea. My first gut reaction was that it came off as taking the fans support for granted. "This is Cleveland…They’re going to show up and back this damn team." After some reflection, though, I now look at it differently. As almost more of a, "Look, I know we suck, but we're gonna try and get better. We need the fans' support. We know you've been through a lot, but you've supported us through the shit before. Don't turn your backs on us now." I like that he seems to give a damn. We lack talent at some areas and are hurt by injuries in others. What I saw on Monday was a defense playing above their talent level, and I have to think that comes from him.
On the other side of the ball, however...ugh. The whole game I kept thinking (and I think I yelled it aloud once or twice at the TV), "Throw the damn ball down the field!" Maybe Quinn doesn't have the accuracy when throwing distance, but Cripes ya gotta try before the last minute of the game! It just got too predictable. Ok, Quinn's lined up over center. I guess it's either gonna be a short pass or a run up the middle. It was extremely frustrating to watch. The creativity in the play calling was just not there. Brian Daboll is to blame, and Mangini is to blame for not recognizing that fact. I'm now on the "fire them both" bandwagon. If somehow Mangini can turn it around and win a couple games, maybe I'll change my mind, but I doubt it. I realize we don't have that many really talented players, but that's also partly his fault. There are talented coaches out there who have experience building a team and who are open for offers, but we went with this guy? I know that coaching isn't the only problem, but it's a big one.

The roster? On the defensive side we have more talent then we had last season. Granted we are missing Braylon and K2, but whose fault is that? The Jets fleeced us.

The point is that Mangini was a bad hire. I followed him closely when he coached in NY and thought he was awful.

Forget people skills. I'm talking about clock management and game plans. The bigger the game the more Herm Edwardsesque he got.

Lets face it. You and I both would've never hired the guy, and you admit that. So just because Randy Lerner, who is football-blind, hired him he deserves time?

Suppose two minutes after RL hired him he would have called you frantically, "Frownie, Frownie, I screwed up and hired Mangini. What should I do?" You definetly would have told him to fire him, right? See where I'm going with this?

Haven't read the Bechta article, but you're going to have to do better than that. Same vague speculation we see everywhere else. "Players can't stand him . . . blah . . . coaches can't coach."

Edwards was definitely a talent, but aside from the coverage rolled to his side(which admittedly is a big deal) we haven't seen much in a while. You have a point that Stuckey gives us another reliable up and coming receiver to help develop our rookies.
As far as Mangini goes......Yak Shemayish. I keep on waffling between hoping he gets fired after one season to being a little pleased that the discipline has improved. I think that the bottom line will be if he can get over his problem of dealing with talented players, because at the end of the day that's what wins games. Keep the good takes coming SammyT....

Maybe Mangini will start giving Robiskie some game time now? In answer to your question however, yeah, we probably got fleeced a bit. That said, it's not to say it might not be better for the team. While he's got talent, Edwards hasn't been playing well for us (hands of butter if you will), so it could be for the best. I don't know anything about Stuckey, but I'd rather have a decent wideout who catches what's thrown to him than a great talent who frustrates to no end by not living up to it. Now, with that in mind, I also think that if the Jets were anxious to get their hands on him, we should have received something a bit more high profile, but I don't know who that would have been.
On a different subject, I am unimpressed (being polite) with Mangini. The defining moment for me came three quarters in against Baltimore. If your team's down by 28 at the beginning of the 4th quarter, and you're on their 12 yard line, you go for it. I don't care if it's fourth down, a field goal in that situation is giving up. There are times when a field goal is not better than nothing. Who gives a crap about 3 points; you should be trying to win the game even when you know you won't. On top of that, I have no great love of either Quinn or D.A., but how does Mangini figure Anderson earned his Cincinnati starting spot by throwing three interceptions in half a game against Baltimore? That doesn't seem to follow for me.

I just found this blog today, and I'm liking your analysis and commentary. I too was, shall we say, underwhelmed when they selected Mangini. I'm hoping that he will surprise and whip this team into shape. Lord knows we need some discipline after all our problems with fundamentals like tackling and catching the ball. I got burned on hope last season, so my hopes aren't high, but as a lifelong Browns fan, they'll never completely die.
